Slow drainage bathrooms, sinks, and toilets indicator major blockages in your sewer drainage.

For sewage from your drainage system to move downhill, the whole setup needs to be airtight. Unpleasant odors from your sewer system are indicative of cracks in your sewer line.

When you have septic waste pooling in your compound, then there is a sewer drainage problem.

Cracks in your foundation or isolated patches of extra green grass are also signs to look for. If the problem still baffles you, you may need to call a plumber.

b. Why are sump pumps useful?

Sump pumps are pump out any excess water that accumulates in the crawl spaces or basement of your house. Sump pumps are beneficial to you in the following ways:

  1. Impede mildew and mold growth
  2. When your basement is damp, such conditions encourage the growth of mold and mildew.
  3. A sump pump will ensure that your basement is dry and free of moisture. The mildew and mold will not be able to thrive.
  4. Prevent electric fire outbreak
  5. Water in your basement may cause exposed electrical wires to short-circuit. This may start a fire. You can avoid short-circuit fires by using a sump pump to pump out the excess water.
  6. Prevent damage from floods
You can use your sump pump to pump out flood water that may damage your basement.

c. Why do sewer drainage problems occur?

You may be experiencing problems in your sewer drainage system because of:

  1. Tree root infiltration
In case you have lots of trees in your compound, then their root system may be the culprit. These roots may break into your sewer lines as they look for water, thus causing a breach.
  2. Debris and grease deposits
Grease and debris flushed down your sewer system may cause unwanted blockages.
  3. Corrosion and rusting
Water passing through your sewer system will cause rusting and corrosion over time. This may cause breaks in your sewer line and cause sewer drainage problems to occur.

d. How do you choose an ideal water heater?

You can determine the size of your water tank heater by the number of people who live in your house. In case you want to get a tankless water heater, check its rating.

The rating should be able to give you an idea of how much hot water it can deliver, at any given time.

If you are conscious about your environment, you can have a solar water heater installed in your home.

e. What do you do when water leaks occur?

If worn our rubber washers or flapper valves are your problem, you can replace these yourself. If the leakage is on a grand scale, you may need to get a plumber to check your plumbing.

f. What do you do when water pipes get frozen?

When your water pipes in your plumbing get frozen, turn off the water supply to those pipes.

If the problem affects all your pipes, turn off the entire supply. This is because the problem usually begins when the water starts to thaw.

To thaw the length frozen pipe length, use a heat lamp, space heater or hair dryer. Use temperature controlled tape to thaw out particular spots on a frozen pipe.

Avoid using a propane torch to thaw out the pipes as this may cause a fire.

If you are not sure what to do, it may be a good idea to consult your local plumber.

g. How do you detect a water leak and see if any are visible?

In case your water meter has a leak indicator, turn off all the water outlets in your house. Check if it gives out a reading. If you notice any coloring in the bowl after a few minutes, then you have a problem with the flapper valves. You may need to replace these valves.
