Plumbing Services FAQ

How to know that you may have sewer drainage problem?

A sewer drainage problem is noticeable when there is a foul smell. Mostly, it occurs before any visual signs – be on the lookout. Secondly, the waste can overflow on the manhole cover. Thirdly, you may hear gurgling noises from the pipes. The sound is created when air is trapped inside. When you experience any of these red flags, you have a plumbing emergency.

Why Sump Pumps are useful?

Sump pumps prevent flooding in your home by pumping out any water that has accumulated in the basement. This prevents floor damage and formation of mold/mildew.

What are the main reasons why sewer drainage problems occur?

Sewer problems can be a nightmare to a homeowner. While there are many reasons that cause sewer drainage the most common is broken or collapsed sewer lines. When the pipe begins to fracture, it becomes susceptible to blockages. This becomes even a greater issue when it’s difficult to visibly see the broken pipe or if you lack adequate space to inspect the problem.

It also occurs when foreign objects are flushed down the drain. The most common objects include toiletries, tampons, baby diapers, and baby wipes. Besides that, it can be caused by fat and grease buildup from your cooking as you rinse utensils down the sink. Needless to say, the clogging usually happens about 30 feet into your sewer line. The grease comes from foods like cheeseburgers, cooking oil, mayonnaise, and butter.

How to choose the most suitable water heater?

This will depend on the household size, energy source, and budget. If you use electricity, you want a unit that heats water quickly. Not to mention, it’s prudent that you consider the operating costs across the different models. Obviously, you need a water heater that can provide your household with enough water. Follow the same criteria if you’re considering other energy options like solar energy, natural gas, fuel, or geothermal energy.

What to do when water leaks occur?

Once you’ve identified the source of the water leak, shut off the valve that controls water supply in your home. After that, find the leaking pipe using a few simple techniques. If you’re unable to repair the damaged section you should seek professional plumbing services. Do not attempt any repair if you’re not confident with your skills.

What to do when water pipes get frozen?

Before you do anything, you should shut off your water supply. Next, follow the pipe that connects to the tap while looking for frost on the outside. To deal with the freeze, use a hair drier or a portable heater. Better still, you can use hold a hot towel or a thermostatically
controlled heat tape. Be gentle as increasing more pressure on the pipe can make it burst. The gate valves may be prone to sticking so you may want to rotate them back and forth.

How to detect a water leak and are all leaks visible?

To check a water leak in the toilet, remove the top and listen very carefully. If there is a leakage, you’ll hear a hissing sound. You should also pay attention to the line running from the meter to the house. Similarly, check the pressure on the hot water tank. It’s also important that you divert your attention to the walls. Look for puddles of water near the wall or discoloration.

Furthermore, you should inspect the walls for any change of texture. Any wall with water leak will develop a bubble-like texture. If the wall has advanced leaks, it will appear to curve downward.

And if you think the leak is coming from poor plumbing, turn off all the faucets, note down the number on your meter and wait for a couple of hours. Should the numbers change, that’s a red flag there is a leak.

Unless you have a major leak, spotting a leak on the wall can be a nightmare. To pinpoint the leak’s location, you can scan the moisture inside the walls using a moisture meter. Place the equipment on different spots until you get the one with the highest reading. Alternatively, you can use an infrared camera to detect the temperature of the wall. A leaking wall will have a cooler temperature.

What is a tankless water heater and how it works?

A tankless water heater is a versatile unit that heats water when you turn on the facet. It uses 30-50% less energy depending on water usage. Because it offers a continuous supply of water, it’s ideal for filling a whirlpool or a big hot tub. The heater operates on propane or natural gas. When the hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels to the unit. Next, a gas burner heats the unit delivering a constant supply of hot water.

How garbage disposals work?

They use impellers fixed on the spinning plate to chew up food scraps down the drain using centrifugal force. The running water flushes the particles into your waste water pipe.

How to clean a garbage disposal?

Take an old toothbrush and scrub off the crud. If you cannot clean the underside of the splash guard, use a pair of tongs. Be gentle to avoid damaging the grinder. After that, flash out the garbage disposal with water to remove any loose dirt. For tougher sludge and debris,
pour two cups of ice cubes into the garbage disposal. Lastly, grind the ice to remove any unwanted odors. A mixture of baking soda and vinegar will also do the magic.

How do faucets work?

When you open a faucet, the water passes through 2 chambers that are separated by a hole. Most faucets use a screw device that closes/opens the washer. As the washer closes the chambers, the water stops to flow. However, facets that release hot or cold water operate differently. When you move the faucet handle, water goes through an embedded disc and then flows out. Depending on the position of discs, cold or hot water flows out.

Why Should I Install a Water Treatment System?

The treatment system removes all toxins, chlorine, and microorganisms from water. Some of these additions have a negative effect on our bodies. Apart from that, it’s cost-effective than buying bottled water. It also creates less plastic waste than using bottled water.

What kind of regular maintenances should be done in a household (regarding plumbing)?

Giving your plumbing a little attention can prevent costly repairs. You should freeze out frozen pipes, fix leaks, check water pressure, inspect the septic tanks, and unclog the drains.
